Fixed Systems for Continuous Monitoring

Rowan Technologies' scanner systems were introduced in the website's Monitoring of Industrial Plant page and are available as fixed systems for continuous monitoring or portable systems for periodic monitoring. Systems for continuous monitoring are described here.

Fixed systems are designed for long-term continuous monitoring of corrosion or crack growth. These systems have a central data logger and control unit, which can be positioned some distance from the monitoring area(s). The control unit can handle up to four monitoring areas with a total of over 500 sensor locations.

The fixed systems were originally developed with the help of UK government funding in the 1990s. The first system was installed in 1999 on a sidewall of a 660MW boiler at Drax power station, Western Europe's largest coal fired power plant. A much larger system was installed at the plant two years later. Papers describing the application of these systems can be found in our Publications page.

Additional systems have been installed on both conventional and FBC boilers for the monitoring of corrosion and on a super-critical boiler in the USA for the monitoring of crack growth on weld-overlaid boiler tubes.
